I was pleased to see the anti-vaccinationist Jock Doubleday's comment on a post here.

(I was less pleased to see that he'd added the same comment to a post that has nothing to do with his thesis. I've deleted that one.)

Do feel free to explore Jock's bold hypotheses about human health, and his above-linked "Vaccine Offer".

Jock unaccountably failed, however, to link to the entirely reasonable terms to which prospective challengers have to agree. Strangely, he doesn't even link to the terms from the Vaccine Offer page itself. Perhaps he was too busy crowing over how he's had no takers for the Offer, which is odd, because as I said, the terms are entirely reasonable and completely not the sort of thing that no human could ever possibly pass.

Summarised, the terms are:

Prospective challengers must be doctors who administer vaccines, or the CEO of a pharmaceutical company. They must be evaluated by three consecutive psychiatrists, named by Jock but paid for by the challenger, who will report their findings in secret to Jock. Then the challenger must provide records of their entire mental-health history to Jock. Then they must pass an e-mail exam about vaccinations, getting all answers right, with the rightness of the answers being determined by Jock, whose strange opinions about vaccines are the source of this whole thing in the first place. Then the challenger must purchase five anti-vaccination books. Then the challenger must take a written exam, once again marked by Jock. Then the challenger must be physically examined by a "medical professional" named by Jock. Then the challenger must not gain more than five pounds of weight between the examination and the actual challenge. Then the challenger has to find three more "medical professionals", who'll get together with another three "medical professionals" provided by Jock, to put the vaccine-challenge dose together. Then the challenger has to provide Jock with risk/benefit documentation they provide to patients they vaccinate. Then the challenger has to appear on television at least five times with Jock, on stations and at places named by Jock, with all of the challenger's travel, food and accommodation costs paid for by the challenger.

That's all just too easy, I'm sure you all agree, so you'll be pleased to learn that all of the above comprises only "Part A" of the contract!

Part A is to be followed by an "Agreement-in-Full". If the challenger finds the terms of the Agreement-in-Full to be unacceptable, whatever they turn out to be, all they have to do is, per Part A, donate $US5000 to Jock's anti-vaccination organisation.

It really couldn't be simpler, could it? I can't understand for a moment why so very many people think Jock's just another crank.

(Jock would also like you to know that the state of the world today is the result of an Illuminati conspiracy. Which, I suppose, may include your family doctor and the World Health Organization.)

    See, Jock thinks he's being fair in the context of the Randi challenge. Because he's an egotist. And anything that seems fair to everyone else but seems unfair to him, is, of course, ultimately and totally objectively unfair to him. Therefore, if he exaggerates every possible aspect to ludicrous (for Jock, read: Totally Fair) proportions of that Randi challenge it's Super Fair, Like Totally, Man.

    I hate to reference it as part of an argument, but see episode 5 of season 13 of South Park for this phenomenom.

    No, Jock, I'm not "making it all about you and your egotism".

    It's "all about" the preposterous litany of hurdles that you place before any prospective challenger, which make your proud statement that nobody's "taken you up" on your "Offer" obviously meaningless. Nobody would take you up on such an offer if you were offering a hundred billion dollars, because it's obvious that nobody can possibly qualify. Heck, it'd be obvious even if you didn't, so entertainingly, promise some more super secret surprise tests for anybody who by some miracle makes it through the first part of your obstacle course.

    I have no idea what's going on in your head, but I strongly doubt that anybody on the outside of your skull could actually pass even some of your tests. Given your frequent clearly incorrect statements and persistent belief that Some Person With A Web Site has discovered things that continue to elude all the world's physicians, I see no reason why anybody should suppose for one second that your "Offer" is even made in good faith.

    I will now cease to talk to you, because I believe you have some sort of delusional disorder, and it's a waste of everybody's time to try to argue with someone in your unfortunate condition.

    Wow, polio denial. Now that's some serious stupid. It's also worth noting that polio is still endemic in a few regions of the world, and in those places vaccine denial is directly responsible for thousands of children dying or going through life as cripples.

    I wonder if Jock believes smallpox just disappeared on it's own too ?

    Antivaccination quackery's just astounding. It's like a fractal, or a poem, it's got something going on at all possible scales. It means it's too much for any one person to properly take on. What use is a lesson on the statistics when someone argues from an opposition of germ theory? When Wakefield pushed himself into the headlines here, Christmas rolled around and I gave up trying to explain exactly what was wrong with it to my family very quickly. It just muddied the waters. A decade, the entire Metal Gear Solid franchise, and a wave of disease and death through affluent anti-vaccination neighbourhoods later, it's finally starting to get through to people that his story just never added up.

    Yep, but that's because those countries are polluted - just look at the site Jock recommended!

    A mainstay of the antivax viewpoint is that various diseases are caused by poor sanitation, "toxins", dissolute lifestyles, contaminants in the actual vaccines, etc. It's one of those things, like flat-earthism, that stands to reason, but only if you don't look too hard, and assume that Science is a monolithic entity populated entirely by fools, monsters, and monstrous fools.

    I understand if you believe it's a waste of your time to argue with someone who has stepped out of the vaccines-as-salvation paradigm.

    Your belief in vaccines as the greatest good stems from decades of institutional indoctrination -- indoctrination which I also had but which I was allowed to break free from by a chance encounter with someone who had also broken free.

    You can continue on with your beliefs -- and with your endless making-it-about-me -- but the truth about vaccines is waiting for you in over a century of scientific research.

    My fiance's mother contracted polio from a bad batch of vaccine. Guess whether my fiance got the polio vaccine?

    Of course her mother had her get the polio vaccine. She didn't want my fiance to go through what she did. Controls are better now and bad vaccines are rarer. Yes, she could have contracted it as well, but odds were against it. Plus, the possibility she could get full-on polio and never walk again or die was horrible to her mother.

    If the current state of the world is due to the Illuminati, wouldn't anyone who knew about the Illuminati's plan, and spread that terrible secret, be in great peril?

    I hear they come at night, make you pay your own way to their super-secret testing centers, where you are subjected to various physical and psychological tests, all of which are secret, and must be paid for by you, and then they vaccinate you. These tests take days and days, so just before they brain-wipe you with that cool flashing light (just like in the MIB documentary with that ~dreamy~ William Smith), they take you to a super secret lab on the inside surface of the earth, and you are sent back in time to the very moment after you were abducted, so you never know that anything happened.

    Of course if you are hypnotized, then the real truth comes out.
